Latest Census Reveals 46.2 Million Americans in Poverty in 2011

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 46.2 million people were in poverty in 2011. The official poverty rate was 15.0 percent, showing no significant changes from the poverty rate in 2010. While the poverty rate remained flat, the findings show that real median household income declined, as did both the percentage and number of people without health insurance between 2010 and 2011.

With less real income for households to invest in savings, and more people without health insurance to protect them from being thrown into debt when an emergency happens, asset building is more important than ever. Assets for Independence projects can help low-income working families grow their assets and plan for a secure financial future in these uncertain times.
