Description:

The purpose of the webinar and accompanying paper is to provide State Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agencies and Community Rehabilitation Programs (CRPs) with current information and resources related to transition-age youth under the Rehabilitation Act.

More specifically, the webinar and accompanying materials will provide:

  1. A brief description of the current policy framework regarding transition under IDEA and the Rehabilitation Act;
  2. A summary of transition-related policy options under consideration by Congress and various stakeholders;
  3. A review of key findings included in recent national reports and studies regarding VR and transition;
  4. Descriptions and links to key national resources developed by technical assistance centers and others;
  5. Examples of policies and practices used by State VR agencies in and outside the Region; and
  6. Descriptions of special programs and demonstrations, including high school/high tech and SSA-funded Youth Transition Demonstration projects and the experience of various states implementing these special programs and demonstrations.

Examples of practices identified in the webinar and the accompanying paper include:

  • Career and college preparation
  • Mentoring
  • Building partnerships with school districts and others
  • Conducting resource mapping
  • Supporting career and employment opportunities in high school (on the job training)
  • Providing user-friendly information to students and families
  • Youth leadership
  • Benefits counseling for youth.

  • Independent Living Center Staff
