Description

Our perceptions are formed through one or both of these elements: experience and information.  Alternatively, misconceptions are based on a lack of experience and/or misinformation.  There is no doubt that some employers have misperceptions about people with disabilities and their ability to contribute and add value to the workplace; the challenge is in how we can change these.

This presentation will explore some of the causes of these misperceptions and ways to address them. We’ll cover 10 key tips and strategies to not only address misperceptions, but prevent them as well. Ultimately, using these strategies will create fundamental changes in the way businesses think and act about hiring and recruiting people with disabilities.

Learning Objectives

  1. Gain an understanding of how perceptions are formed
  2. Understand the process to address and change misperceptions
  3. Increase knowledge of key strategies to address, change and prevent misconceptions

Participants will also learn about the Southeast TACE Job Development Exchange (JDX).  The Southeast TACE is expanding its Job Development Exchange (JDX) in response to needs identified by job developers. The JDX will strengthen job developers’ capacity to maximize employment opportunities for individuals with the most significant disabilities and will provide state vocational rehabilitation agencies (VR) and community rehabilitation providers (CRPs) responsible for job development with the information and tools they need to successfully engage employers and address a wide range of barriers to employment. It will offer a series of Professional Learning Experiences on priority topics identified by job development professionals. Each package will be comprised of:

  3. Structured opportunities to network via a listserv with colleagues, businesses, and national authorities
