"What comes next" should be on the mind of everyone the moment youth with disability enters secondary education. If adult employment is the goal, then practitioners should be mindful of the number one predictor of post-secondary employment success - work experience and employment during the secondary school years. This session will outline and discuss the rationale and the strategies for developing meaningful and targeted work experiences during secondary education enrollment that will ultimately lead to long term jobs and active community lives. It will present the case for including work-related experiences and, even more importantly, paid work, as integral features of the preparation for transition to adult employment. It will also offer strategies for organizing work experiences, recruiting employers to offer these experiences, facilitating these experiences through partnerships with adult employment services, and supporting youth in their workplaces.
