Description

Discovery coupled with paid work experiences, as expanded Discovery, have proven to be very effective approaches to learn about career interests and skill sets for youth in transition.  Join this session to discuss these and other strategies being used in the Pathways to Careers model to ensure that individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities have a fully informed choice of employment options.  Other discussion areas include strategies to shift to Discovery implementation rather than evaluation on an internship, set up of employer supports, and other general internship features.

Topics:
  • The value of internships in Discovery; confirm characteristics of work, mentor, skill development
  • The features of internship; zero exclusion, potential to hire….basically the criteria of the site
  • The shifting from evaluation to Discovery; what to look for, how to document, how to gather
  • The BIG - things Pathways has learned about the intern, how it was used, examples and pictures
